All-new 2023 Honda HR-V debuts

The previous generation HR-V was one of my favorite designs that Honda currently has available in the US (the Honda e from Europe is right up there), so this update is a little disappointing. While this new car is attractive, it lacks some of the elements that made the current HR-V such a design standout. Honestly, this new car kinds looks like it was designed in Dearborn, Mi (Ford) and the rear fascia is generic crossover, Not ugly, but... The pics I've chosen for this post are the Sport model (except the side view after the jump) whose blacked-out elements accentuate the positive elements of the design. There are many improvements to the '23 HR-V like an updated interior, a new engine, bigger size (if you consider that an upgrade) and lots more tech and safety equipment. The new engine is a 2.0-liter four that puts out 158 hp (up almost 20 hp) but that number is still under-whelming even for a vehicle of this compact size. Fuel economy is 26/32 (cirt/highway) which is good but not great. Subtract about 1 mpg each if you choose all-wheel drive. Prices start at $23,650 (plus taxes, license, fees, options, destination) for the LX FWD model and go up to $28,950 + for the EX-L model with AWD.  Sport versions fall in between the other two trim levels. One of the biggest disappointments is that there are NO EV or hybrid options. It says something when Ford's Maverick compact truck gets far superior fuel economy when compared to this new crossover. Maybe those models will be added in the future. This is what Honda gets for following Toyota's line-up decisions. Honda will catch-up in the future, In fact, they just sourced a new EV crossover from GM and we should be seeing that model in about one year (info to come). If you've gotta have a Honda, this new HR-V has a lot going for it and it should be relatively popular. I just expect more from Honda I guess. More to come. Select "read more" below to see lots of info in the extensive media release and a brief b-roll video after the jump.
